But in the great majority of cases, the real reason sits inside your own home — the air conditioner, running for hours on the hottest days of the year, combined with a tariff structure that punishes high consumption.

Why Summer Hits the Bill So Hard

Your winter bill and your summer bill can differ by two or three times even though your household is exactly the same. The reason is simple physics: in winter, your heaviest loads are fans, lights, and a fridge. In summer, a single air conditioner can draw more power than almost everything else in the house put together. And because electricity tariffs in Pakistan rise steeply with every slab you cross, that one appliance can push your whole bill into expensive territory.

The Air Conditioner Is the Biggest Culprit

A typical 1.5-ton non-inverter split AC draws around 1.8 to 2 kW while its compressor runs. Run it for 8 hours a night, and one AC alone can add roughly 400 or more units to your monthly consumption. Two ACs running every night can account for the majority of a large summer bill. Inverter ACs are kinder — once the room cools, they slow the compressor down and typically use around a quarter to a third less electricity for the same cooling — but an inverter AC run 24 hours a day will still cost you.

Slab Rates Multiply the Damage

This is the part most people miss. Pakistan’s domestic tariff is a slab system: the first hundred units cost much less per unit than units consumed beyond several hundred. Roughly speaking, a household using 300 units might pay far less than double what a 150-unit household pays — because the extra units are billed at higher slab rates, plus fuel price adjustments and taxes pile on top. In summer, the AC pushes you across those slab boundaries, so every additional hour of cooling gets charged at the most expensive rate on the bill. That is why the same extra 100 units feel much cheaper in winter than in summer.

Small Habits That Make a Big Difference

Cooling a leaking room is like filling a leaking tank. Start with the cheap wins:

Set the thermostat to 24–26°C. Each degree lower costs noticeably more, and the room still feels cool.

Use a ceiling or standing fan together with the AC. Moving air lets you feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting.

Seal the doors and windows of the cooled room. A gap under the door wastes cooled air all night.

Keep the AC’s outdoor unit in the shade and its filters clean. A dusty filter makes the compressor work longer for the same cooling.

Use the timer. Cool the bedroom for an hour or two, then let it run on fan-only while you sleep.

Move heavy chores like ironing and water heating away from the evening hours when the whole household load is already high.

None of these requires a big investment. Together, households often cut their summer consumption by a visible margin — which, under the slab tariff, translates into a bigger percentage saving on the bill than on the units.

When It Makes Sense to Invest

If your summer bills have been painful for years, the honest math is this: an old fixed-speed AC is the most expensive appliance you own to run. Replacing it with an inverter AC, adding basic roof or wall insulation, or installing a small solar system sized for your daytime cooling load can pay back in a few summers. Do the numbers with your actual bills in hand before you decide — and size any purchase against your real consumption, not the showroom brochure.

Need Help With Your Power Project?

Apexcore Infrastructure provides substation construction, transmission line works, testing & commissioning, electrical trading, and technical manpower support across Pakistan and the Gulf.
